ABOUT ASHLAND 4-H COMMUNITY CLUB

What is 4-H

4-H is the largest out-of-school youth program in the United States. This Youth Development Program emphasizes enrichment education through inquiry-based learning, such as leather-working, cooking, blacksmithing, livestock projects, and much more. The monthly meetings we hold are led by the junior officers aged 10-19.

Through 4-H, young people learn and grow in partnership with caring adults to develop the skills and confidence needed to become contributing, productive, self-directed members of their community. The youth are encouraged to discover their passions, practice self-reflection and set goals. Because 4-H uses an active, learn-by-doing approach, young people see how their actions make a difference in the lives of others and the world around them.

Oregon 4-H History

The roots of 4-H in Oregon reach back to 1904 when L.R. Alderman, Yamhill County school superintendent, organized the first boy’s industrial club in Dayton.

It was in 1911 that the Board of Regents of Oregon Agricultural College established the Oregon Extension Service, which became the foundation for today’s 4-H program.
